Discovery Memorial

In 1852, a group of pioneers in what became Rockwall, Tx, were digging a well on the property of Terry Utley Wade. A neighbor, Benjamin Boydstun and another neighbor named Stevens or Stephenson (according to the best recollections of a knowledgeable resident) encountered layers of rock underground, which when uncovered appeared to be like a wall.

It was too deep to dig below and too wide to dig around, so it became the 4th side of the well. The other three sides were lined in timber.
Other places in the surrounding area also found similar layers of rock of various sizes of layers.
When the town and later county were named, rather than naming it after one of several prominent residents, it was decided to name it after this very extensive geological feature, the Rock Wall.

In 2004 a local art group, the Rockwall County Alliance for the Arts, decided to erect a monument to the founders. A contest was held to create a sculpture depicting the “discovery” of the rock wall, depicting the original farmers who dug the well.
After reviewing several submissions, my sculpture was selected to be the model for the monument. The memorial was completed and place in 2023.
